Application Services Governance MQ Leaders: When SOA goes API

We are proud of a number of accolades handed down to Mashery in the past seven years. We were the company that invented API Management, the first to have a multitenant SaaS platform, the first to host a conference focused on succeeding in business with APIs, the first to achieve PCI compliance, and last year we became the first to offer business-side API packaging that lets non-IT users define API methods without writing any code. We feel pretty proud that these firsts and bests have led to such a large number of API successes with the Mashery name attached.

Today we at Mashery are proud to be part of another first – Gartner has named Mashery a Leader in its first Application Services Governance Magic Quadrant report.  This accolade bears significance beyond the placement of Mashery in a new Leader quadrant. Its recognition of the combined influence both Mashery and our customers’ success has generated on the business value and imperative of APIs. This report represents a uniquely rapid and significant transition: how an influential IT influencer like Gartner has come to see the business value of APIs.

In 2011, Gartner delivered its final SOA Governance MQ, just as the gateway and web services technology market began to shift significantly toward API Management. Just 18 months following the last MQ on this market, the firm’s MQ analysis of SOA Governance has been replaced by a new category it calls Application Services Governance, which consists of two streams: SOA Governance and API Management.

For us, this change was inevitable. While Mashery has delivered consistently on its vision of helping companies use APIs to deliver on new business opportunities, rather than just technical governance, we’ve seen the gateway vendors recognize the gap created by API Management’s success in working with their traditional customer base, and pivot to offer business-oriented tools. Hence a market was born.

The MQ's heavy weight on API Management is telling. According to the report, “There has been a sharp surge in the usage of Web APIs, and the corresponding need to manage them, using rapidly deployed solutions, typically in the cloud.”

We are proud to gain this leadership position and believe this to be further recognition of our status as the world's leading provider of API technology, and we invite you to download the report to learn more. So, whether you are an enterprise adopting API management platforms, looking for tools/smart best practices to scale faster, internally or externally, Gartner’s MQ report on Application Services Governance can be understood best by looking at it from an eye for why the market has evolved, and understanding its new emphasis on API management.
