Why launch an API?

Can you give some examples?
“The API cuts our app development time by as much as 75%. We used to manage code for each partner. Now we give partners the API and they go to town. We also build Facebook apps with the API, as well as many one-off Web and mobile apps."
 
Any advice for those who are launching API programs?
“If colleagues are skeptical about opening up, remind them that a well-designed API and solid terms of service keep you in control."
