Increasing the visibility of API value with reporting done right
There's a paradox out there -- the more innovative and diverse the myriad of employee-owned devices and digital channels a company uses to scale, the less insight that company has into how these new business avenues contribute to business value. As we near the end of the year, the advent of measurable business objectives, metrics and reports hang in the not-so-far future.
APIs are the means by which companies allow the core back-end services that power their websites to be built into mobile applications and integrated into applications and platforms provided by their partners and customers. Because APIs are an increasingly important business driver for many organizations, a lack of visibility into API activity, as well as the inability to measure their ultimate business value, creates a "black hole" in organizations' efforts to optimize these new channels.
As businesses expand their presence from the web onto new devices, and leverage new digital channels, the need for powerful API analytics tools becomes clear: accurate business reporting tools must manage increasingly complex channels to measure a more diverse array of platforms. In order to manage the rich data that matches the level of traditional Business Intelligence, the business needs to manage reporting agnostically across mobile and other connected devices.
Enter temporality. As enterprises adopt ideas such as Gartner Research’s Pace-Layered Application Strategy, the app itself becomes less and less useful for measuring core business value. The lifecycle of the app is disintegrating. New purpose-built apps are being developed with an effort emphasis on apps that correlate to core business value. As business strategy and processes changes, so do the apps themselves, and their emphasis. Traditional mobile app analytics help a company tweak its next app version. API reporting and analytics have the ability to tap a core service powering an app for the same data, parse out analytics on individual developers, app versions and even partners. If the apps change, the reporting stays constant, and remains just as useful.
Measurement is core to the premise of APIs as Products, allowing companies to both accurately measure as well as optimize the resources they've put into API development and management.
